An Unlikely Crew United In Christ

A chef, baker, a candlestick maker…

That little rhyme immediately pops into my head when I think about the girls on my team because we are all so different and unique in our own ways. We'll be living together for the next four months as we pursue Christ and share the good news to the people of Guatemala. You'll probably hear me referring to them many times throughout blogging so what better way to start than to introduce you?

This past week at training camp, I had the pleasure of starting to know them as we all were challenged to surrender our fears and anxiety to Jesus and dwell on Him as our strength before this big venture. There are a total of 9 girls, including our fearless leader Alyssa.

First I must mention Abby who sat in a hammock next to me as I began to write this post. She's a 5'10 gorgeous blonde whose Oklahoma accent has to make you smile. Her spunky outgoing personality shows that she's a born leader.

Next are the three girls I shared a cabin with while in Georgia: Grace, Victoria, and Allyson. Grace is a curly headed culinary arts student whose sweet voice and temperament make her a natural listener.

Victoria has adorable striped glasses and looks fabulous in violet. I was struck my her honesty and openness from the first moment I talked with her. I also like that she thinks things through before she speaks.

Ally, for short, was a burista back home and is one of a set of triplets. I love how she would good-naturedly greet me every morning from the bunk below.

In the room across from ours stayed Abby, Christina W., Laura, Christina H., and Alyssa. Christina W. is from a northern rural part of Canada (coolest accent ever) and worked as a welder out in the oil patch for the past year. One night she sat with me and spoke life-giving words over me as I expressed some of my spiritual struggles. I hope her humble strength rubs off on me over the next four months.

Laura is all of 6ft. tall, clearly an athlete and has an adorable nose ring. I think she will be a rock in our team as someone who will keep us grounded and unified. The youngest on our team, Christina H. just turned 18 on Friday but she was wisdom beyond her years. She also has a Chicago accent and her quick wit will take you by surprise.

And last is Alyssa. I liked her immediately when I met her, she's a stunningred head who hails from Nova Scotia. She's joyful and speaks the truth powerfully with passion that both encourages and challenges me.

There you have it. But beneath all of these differences lies a bond between us that I can feel has already formed. We all have a common goal and came here for one reason- to know and follow hard after Christ. God is already moving and it's just week one.
